Getting an ATM for Your Business

How Free ATM Placement Works, and Why an ATM Company Would Give You One for Free

If it sounds too good to be true, you're right to ask questions. Here's exactly how the money works, who pays for what, and what you should get in writing.

The short answer

With free ATM placement, an ATM company puts its own machine in your business at no cost to you. The company buys the machine, loads the cash, and handles repairs. It earns money from the small fee customers pay to use the ATM, and it shares part of that fee with you. You provide the space and an outlet.

"Free" is the word that makes smart business owners nervous.

You've been pitched before. A free this, a no-cost that. Then the fine print shows up. So when someone offers to put an ATM in your business for free, the right first question is: what's the catch?

Here's the honest answer. There's no catch in how the money works. There can be a catch in how some companies run their service and write their agreements. This guide explains both, so you can tell a good offer from a bad one.

Why would an ATM company give you a free ATM?

Because your business has something the ATM company needs: customers who want cash.

An ATM makes money one way. Every time someone withdraws cash, they pay a small fee for the convenience. That fee is called a surcharge. For a sense of scale, Bankrate's 2025 study found the average surcharge at bank-owned ATMs hit a record $3.22.

An ATM company can buy the best machine on the market. But if it sits in an empty room, it earns nothing. It needs to be where people are. That's your business.

So the deal is simple. The ATM company brings the machine and does all the work. You bring the location. You both share the fees. That's why it's free: the ATM company isn't doing you a favor. It's a partnership where each side brings something the other one needs.

Who pays for what in a free ATM placement?

Here's how it breaks down in our free ATM placement program.

We pay for:

  • The ATM machine itself
  • Delivery and installation
  • All the cash inside the machine
  • The wireless connection that runs it
  • Remote monitoring, around the clock
  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Keeping the machine compliant with chip card (EMV), accessibility (ADA), and data security (PCI) rules

You provide:

  • A few square feet of floor space
  • A standard electrical outlet nearby

That's the whole list. You don't need a phone line or internet. Our machines connect by wireless cellular service.

How does the money flow?

Let's follow one withdrawal.

A customer walks up to the ATM and takes out $60. They pay a surcharge to use the machine. The $60 comes out of the machine, which we filled with our cash. The customer's bank sends that $60 back to us through the payment network.

The surcharge is split. Part goes to us to cover the machine, the cash, the connection, and the service. Part goes to you.

How you get paid: your share lands in your bank account by direct deposit (ACH) at the start of each month. It comes straight from the payment networks. You don't send invoices or chase checks.

How you know it's right: every month, you get a statement by email. It shows how many transactions your machine did and how much you made. You can see exactly what your ATM is doing.

What does the process look like, step by step?

Here's what happens from the first call to the first withdrawal.

  1. You reach out. Call, text, or fill out our form. We ask about your business, your customers, and where you are.
  2. We look at your location. We figure out the best spot for the machine, where customers see it and staff can keep an eye on it.
  3. You review the agreement. You get a simple, standard placement agreement. It protects you by putting everything in writing: what we handle, what you provide, how and when you get paid, how long it runs, and who is responsible if something goes wrong. No handshake promises. Read it, and ask Landon about anything.
  4. We install and load the machine. We deliver it, set it up, connect it, and fill it with cash.
  5. Your customers start using it. We watch it remotely and handle refills and repairs.

How fast? We can have a machine running in as little as 24 hours. Sometimes it takes up to two weeks, depending on scheduling.

So where is the catch?

The catch isn't in the money. It's in the service.

Most bad ATM experiences come down to the same few problems. The machine runs out of cash on a Friday night. It breaks, and nobody answers the phone. The monthly payments shrink with no explanation. The agreement renews on its own, and getting out is a fight.

None of those problems are built into free placement. They come from companies that don't run it well. That's why the company matters more than the offer.

Before you sign with anyone, including us, get clear answers to these questions:

  • Who do I call when it breaks, and will a real person answer?
  • How do you know when the machine is running low on cash?
  • How and when do I get paid, and will I get a statement?
  • How long is the agreement, how does it renew, and how does it end?
  • If the machine is stolen, who takes the loss?

We wrote a full checklist in 12 questions to ask before you let an ATM company into your business.

What happens if the ATM is stolen or damaged?

It's a fair worry. ATM thefts do happen, including here in the Birmingham area.

When we place a machine, the machine and the cash inside it are ours. If they're stolen, that loss falls on us, not on you. Damage to your building is normally handled by your own property insurance. Our placement agreement puts these responsibilities in writing, so there's no guessing later.

How much will you make from a free ATM?

It depends on how many of your customers use it. A busy bar on a Saturday night is a different story from a quiet shop on a Tuesday.

We don't post a standard split, because every location is different. Your share depends on your transaction volume, your location, and your history. We walk through the numbers with you before anything is installed. To see how to estimate it yourself, read how much a business can make from a free ATM.

Is free ATM placement right for your business?

Free placement tends to work best for businesses with steady foot traffic and customers who use cash. Think bars and nightclubs, convenience stores, gas stations, laundromats, barbershops, and event venues.

It's a good fit if you want an ATM for your customers without spending money up front or taking on another job. If you'd rather own the machine and keep every fee, that's a different path. We compare them all in do you have to buy an ATM?

Common questions

Yes. With a legitimate free placement, you pay nothing for the machine, installation, cash, or repairs. The ATM company earns its money from the fee customers pay to use the machine. Read the placement agreement before you sign so you know the terms, the length, and how it ends.

Each time a customer withdraws cash, they pay a small fee called a surcharge. The ATM company keeps part of that fee to cover the machine, the cash, the connection, and the service, and shares part of it with the business.

A few square feet of floor space and a standard electrical outlet near where the machine will go. Our ATMs use wireless cellular service, so you don't need a phone line or internet.

With Ford Frontier Investments, your share is deposited directly into your bank account by ACH at the start of each month. The money comes straight from the payment networks. You also get a monthly email statement showing your transaction count and earnings.
